How to Measure a Garage Door

Measuring your garage door accurately is the first crucial step when preparing to replace it with a new Overhead Door™ Brand model. Ensuring precise measurements guarantees a perfect fit, enhancing the performance and longevity of your new door. This guide will walk you through the essential steps to measure the width, height, and clearance requirements, helping you make an informed decision and ensuring a seamless installation process for your new Overhead Door™ Brand garage door.

5 Steps to Measure a Garage Door

Replacing your garage door with a new Overhead Door™ Brand model starts with precise measurements. Understanding common garage door dimensions can streamline the process. Standard widths are 8’, 9’, 16’, and 18’, while heights are typically 7’ or 8’. Custom sizes are also available. Follow these steps to measure your garage door accurately:

What You'll Need:

A 25-foot tape measure

Width (A):

Step 1: Hook your tape measure on one edge of the garage door opening.

Step 2: Pull the tape across to the other side to measure the distance between the left and right sides.

Double-check: Open the garage door and measure from jamb to jamb.

Height (B):

Step 1: Hook your tape measure on the bottom of the garage door.

Step 2: Measure up to the top of the door.

Double-check: Open the garage door and measure from the floor to the header.

Note: Watch for any floor irregularities.

Sideroom (C):

Step 1: Measure the space between the wall and the door jamb on both sides of the door.

Note: Allow up to 6 inches on each side for vertical track installation.

Headroom (D):

Step 1: Use a ladder to extend the tape measure from the ceiling to the bottom of the door header.

Note: Consider any obstructions below the ceiling such as an entry or attic door.

Room Depth (E):

Step 1: Hook the tape measure on the concrete slab at the door opening.

Step 2: Measure back to the farthest point where the hardware or opener will be installed.

Note: This measurement is crucial for horizontal track installation. If space is limited, consider a side-mount garage door opener.

Tips:

Record all measurements and have them ready when purchasing or requesting a quote.
Verify the header is level and measure at multiple points for accuracy.

By following these steps, you'll ensure your new Overhead Door™ Brand garage door fits perfectly, enhancing both the appearance and functionality of your home.
