Be Ready this Winter with Battery Backup Systems for Your Garage Door Opener

Battery Backup for Garage Door Opener

overhead door battery backup

Bundle up! According to the Farmers’ Almanac, it looks like we may be in for a biting cold and snowy winter. Heavy snowstorms are predicted for the Great Lakes region, the Midwest and New England, with the majority of snowfall slated to come down in January and February.

A severe snowstorm can easily knock out power for days, leaving you with no electricity to run your garage door opener. Instead of taking the risk of being trapped inside or attempting to navigate in the pitch-black to manually open the door in the dark, installing a battery backup system for your garage door opener is a wise choice.

What is a garage door opener battery backup?

The Overhead Door™ Battery Backup is an add-on system that can be easily installed to open and close your heavy garage door in the event of a power outage. Powered by Interstate Batteries®, the battery backup accessory enables an opener to operate the garage door at 3.5 inches per second. Additionally, if the power is out for an extended period of time, the unit will run up to 50 cycles in a 24-hour period after the initial outage.

It is compatible with Overhead Door® Destiny® and Odyssey® garage door openers, which are among the brand’s most reliable and powerful openers.

How is the battery backup accessory installed?

With several mounting options available, the battery backup can easily be installed by either an Overhead Door™ Distributor or the homeowner. It’s charged and powered through a connector cable that runs between the opener and the unit, eliminating the need to plug into an outlet.

The unit comes with an 8-AMP, sealed-lead acid battery (SLA) from Interstate. The battery will reach a full charge within 48 hours.
