California Makes Garage Door Backup Batteries a Requirement

The Overhead Door™ brand has you covered for battery backup in the state of California.

The last few years have seen California devastated by some of the worst wildfires in the state’s history. Thousands of people have been affected by the fires including, many families who lost loved ones. In total, there were over 140 deaths caused by fires between 2017 and 2018. These wildfires and other natural disasters have prompted the California Senate to pass Bill 969, in an effort to keep residents safe.

The new bill passed in the fall of 2018, states that all newly installed garage door openers in the state of California must have a battery backup. July 2019 marks the first month that California will require all residents undergoing a garage door or garage door opener replacement to have a battery backup system that can operate in the case of a power outage for a safe evacuation. While now mandatory in California, backup battery capabilities are an essential safety precaution all homeowners across the country can benefit from having.

The Overhead Door™ Brand Battery Backup, powered by Interstate Batteries®, one of the nation’s largest battery replacement companies, has been providing reliable garage door operation in the event of electricity outages since 2013. To ensure that there is an opener to meet every homeowner’s need, no matter the power, speed or features, the Overhead Door™ brand has expanded their battery backup options. Recently, the Legacy® 650 and 850 became available with battery backup making the safety option accessible throughout the entire Overhead Door® opener lineup. The Destiny®, Legacy® and Odyssey® garage door openers combine reliability, speed and power, all with quiet operation.

The Battery Backup accessory enables an opener to operate the garage door at 3.5 inches per second, and, in the event of an extended loss of electricity, the unit will run up to 50 cycles in a 24-hour period after an initial power outage.

With several mounting options available, this accessory is designed to be unobtrusive, and since it is charged and powered via a connector cable running between the opener and the unit, there is no need for it to be plugged into an outlet. For ease of use, the Battery Backup can be easily installed by either an Overhead Door™ Distributor or the homeowner. The unit reaches full charge within 48 hours and has front-facing LEDs that indicate charge status, so homeowners can guarantee their system is always ready. For homeowners that want a battery backup that is completely integrated into the opener, the Legacy 920® is available with the battery attached to the back of the opener.

In addition to the Legacy® and Destiny® garage door openers having a Battery Backup, the openers are also integrated with the company’s award-winning OHD Anywhere® technology that allows homeowners the ability to monitor and operate their garage doors from anywhere using a smart device on-the-go via the company’s app or even by voice with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

With the Overhead Door™ Brand Battery Backup and the company’s century of experience, customers can rest easy knowing that, with electricity or not, they will always be able to access their garage.
