Types of Insulation Material

Polystyrene insulates by limiting heat transfer through its low thermal conductivity and closed-cell structure which minimizes airflow within it.

Polyurethane has a lower thermal conductivity and is denser than polystyrene. It’s often used as a foam that expands to seal gaps to form a tight thermal barrier. Polyurethane will also add durability to your door, making it more resistant to vibrations and shaking.

Both materials are versatile, moisture-resistant, and great at insulating. Determining which insulation is best for you depends on what you’re going to use your garage for and the climate conditions of where you live.

Benefits of Garage Insulation

An insulated garage door ensures year-round comfort by effectively regulating temperatures within your garage, keeping it cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Whether you're facing scorching heat or freezing cold, the insulation acts as a barrier, creating a more pleasant environment for both your vehicles and any activities you may undertake in your garage.

By minimizing heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer, an insulated garage door from Overhead Door helps to reduce energy consumption, resulting in lower heating and cooling costs throughout the year. The enhanced thermal efficiency provided by the insulation ensures that your garage maintains a more consistent temperature, optimizing energy usage and saving you money on utility bills.

An insulated garage door from Overhead Door significantly reduces noise transmission, offering quieter operation that minimizes disruptions to your home and neighborhood. The insulation absorbs sound vibrations, resulting in a more peaceful environment inside and outside your garage, enhancing overall comfort for you and your neighbors.

An insulated garage door from Overhead Door offers exceptional durability, reinforced with extra layers to withstand everyday wear and tear. This increased durability translates to a greater return on investment, providing better resistance to environmental factors. The effectiveness of the insulation is quantified by the R-value, with Overhead Door's Thermacore® Insulated Garage Doors boasting impressive R-values of up to 17.5, ensuring superior insulation against extreme temperatures and prolonged structural integrity.

Steel is a durable, attractive material commonly used for garage doors. By itself, steel garage doors offer little thermal protection, but the Overhead Door™ Thermacore® insulated steel garage doors feature our sandwich construction of steel-polyurethane-steel as well as between-section seals with thermal breaks. This reduces air infiltration, making it an ideal choice to keep your home comfortable in cold or hot climates.

Thermal Ratings to Consider

U-factor - R-value - STC Rating

The U-factor measures the rate at which heat is transferred through a material, such as a garage door. A lower U-factor indicates better insulation, meaning the garage door will resist heat flow more effectively.

The R-value evaluates the thermal resistance of a garage door. It represents how well the door can impede the flow of heat. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulation capability of the garage door. U-factor is not the reciprocal of the R-value for residential garage doors.

The STC rating of a garage door indicates its effectiveness in muffling sound. The higher the STC rating, the more effectively the door will block sound. If noise reduction is a concern for you (e.g., if you have a drumset in your garage), a garage door with a higher STC rating would be ideal. Higher R-values are generally associated with higher STC ratings.
